First United Methodist is the oldest church in South Bend - it had its beginning in 1831 when Rev. Nehemiah Griffith, a traveling minister, came seeking members in Northern, Indiana. In 1835 a small frame church was built on Main Street between LaSalle and Colfax. After several moves, it was established at its present location at Main and Madison and is now the large and multi-winged brick church depicted in this watercolor. First United Methodist is known for its many social service ministries and remains as a central point in the heart of South Bend.
