Culver's Naval school was founded in the summer of 1902. The O. W. Fowler, Culver's first square rigger, was in use from 1941 until 1982, when its hull was found to be unsound. To replace the Fowler, a new boat with a sturdier steel hull, named the R. H. Ledbetter, was built. In the spring of 2002, as part of the Naval School's Centennial Celebration, the Ledbetter made a spectacular voyage, traveling up the coast from Palm Beach, Florida to Washington, D. C.

Almost every July, on a special Saturday and Sunday evening, the Ledbetter travels along the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee in full sail. On hand, the summer school band plays old favorites for this moonlight serenade. A caravan of boats and pontoons serve as an escort. Once you enjoy this spectacle, you'll want to return again and again.

(Our special thanks to Jerry Nieminen, former Culver sailing instructor, for sharing his striking Ledbetter photo, the inspiration for this painting.)
